Hello Anna! It is interesting to note that some genealogists have historically believed the Zane and Ziani to descend from one progenitor, while others have raised this descent into question. As max08 confirms - the stemmi of these two cognomi were diverse.

Il genealogista Barbaro, che a me piace di preferire e al Zabarella e al Cappellari moderni, perche essendo patrizio o occupato continuarente negli studi genealogici compilo l'opera sua o su pubblici documenti, o su private autentiche carte, non fa discendere la famiglia Zane dagli antichi Ziani estinti, secondo lui, in 'Dinomante' 1575 come si e di sopra veduto.

La famiglia Ziani, egli dice, partita da Iesolo (Equilino) findo dal 754 era venuta ad abitare a Torcello, e poi in Rialto dove furono Tribuni.

La famiglia Zane abitante gia in Eraclea, era detta Zani, e Janni, poi a Matamauco (Malamocco) di dove venne in Rialto dell' 855. Egli comincia l'albero Zane da Reniero da santa Croce 1265-1297 che fu padre di Nicolo detto Pazzo 1261, da cui venne Andrea da s. Maria M. Domini 1297 e tutti i moderni Zane.

Gli altri genealogisti dicono che e una sola famiglia Zani, Zane, Ziani, Giani; che abito in quei luoghi, e pongono, dopo altri, del 976 Pietro Zane tribuno e consigliere del doge Pietro Orscolo che aveva due figlioli, l'uno Andrea 991 tribuno e consigliere, l'atro Giovanni tribuno del 1009. Dalla linea di Andrea 991 fanno venire il doge Sebastiano Ziani, il quale avendo avuto due figliuoli Pietro doge, e Giacomo co. di Ragusi, dicono che la linea di Pietro doge si estinse in suo figlio Marco testatore 1253; e che la l inea di Giacomo si estinse in Marco detto da alcuni Marino (v. Coronelli p 22) 1299 procuratore di san Marco.

Dalla linea poi di Giovanni tribuno 1009 fanno discendere tutti li Zane della moderna famiglia.

A convalidare questo assunto, reca il Cappellari, prova dello stemma Ziani e dello stemma Zane. Il primo de'Ziani era diviso d'oro e d'argento carico di sei gigli di colori contrapposti, il secondo de'Zane e una volpe in scudo per diviso d'arento e d'azzuro di coloro cantrapposti; e dice che Leone Matina ove parla de'dogi Sebastiano e Pietro Ziani assegna loro e l'uno e l'altro scudo congiunti ed inquartati insieme.

Ma non vede egli il Cappellari che Leon Matina autore del secolo XVII contemporaneo al Zabarella, stette alle parole di questo, e quindi non fa maggior prova? E vero che lo stemma de'Ziani era caricato de'gigli, com'u vero che lo stemma de' Zane e la volpe. Ma non ne viene per questo che lo averlo unito insieme da' moderni debba far credere, che in origine sia tutta una famiglia: anzi la differenza rimarcabile di que' due stemmi fa tenere che la sia del tutto diversa, e nelle cronache nostre mas. di famiglie altra e la Ziani, altra la Zane, e son divisi gli stemmi, non inquartati. Ma che piu? Nel sopracitato instromento 1151 ossia atto di quintanza del doge Morosini ai Baseggio si veggono sottoscritti con cognome diverso i Ziani e i Zane, cioe Stefano e Pietro ed altri Ziani, e Pietro e Domenico Zane. E cosi pure nel riferito docum. 1166 dell'elezione del conte d'Arbe, si veggono variamente scritte le dette due famiglie Ziani e Giane; il che prova evidentemente che allora esisteva una famiglia Zane diversa dalla Ziani.

Nei posteriori secoli e piu a noi vicino fuvvi, non patrizio, questo cognome Ziani onde usci Pietro Andrea professore di musica e Sebastiano Ziani camaldolese, del quale varie cose registransi nella Biblioteca Sammicheliana p. 1240; e anche del 1678 era vicario della scuolo della Carita Giambattista Ziani, il cui nome sta impresso in una delle medaglie solite comniarsi da quella celebre archiconfraternia; ma gia e di questi e di altri accadera occasione di parlare altrove.

What is the provenance of the stemma you've included? It is from this 'lost' book?

Regarding a genealogical research on your Zane ancestors - you'll have to work backwards, line by line, starting with your oldest known Zane ancestor (your grandmother?). You'll search for baptismal records, vital records, marriage records, and you'll trace each line, one by one.
Do you know when your Zane ancestors moved to Greece?

Also the dates that accompany the shield you've provided - 1173, 1205; reflect the years that Sebastiano and Pietro Ziani, respectively, were elected Doge of Venice.

Regarding the date of 1682 - it could potentially be reference to D. Pedro Andres Ziani, actual Maestro de detta R. Cappella 1680-1684, but this seems odd.

Finally, I believe the date of 1880 refers to Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti, an English inventor born in Liverpool, who founded The Ferranti company (in 1882). His career began in 1880, and it is well noted. (Sebastian was the grandson of Marco Aurelio Zani de Ferranti, who was born in Bologna, and eventually led this branch of the family outside of Italy).


The grouping of these dates seems odd. Once we consider that the stemma you've provided is entirely diverse from both the stemmi of the Ziani and of the Zane as provided by max08, and further - that the stemma is also entirely diverse from any I've seen of the famiglia Ferranti or Ferrante but the dates refer to the family Ziani, it is possible that the dates were mistakenly added to an authentic stemma of the Famiglia Zane.

The stemma i provided is an embroidery commissioned by my aunt and made by a stitching artist 30 year ago. My aunt was in South Africa, so my Grandfather sent her a black and white sketch. My aunt did not remember the corect colours, so the colours are not 100% correct. I asked my son to edit the picture and make it black and white.

The other dates are from an old book callde "Fillimon's History", by the historian Fillimon after the Greek Revolution for Independedce of 1821.
According to this book, my ancestors were "the first governors from Venice" to rule Kalamata in Peloponese Greece after the Venetians took Peloponese from the Ottomans. They stayed in Greece and fought in the Greek Revolution for Independedce of 1821. The book included the history of my ancestors and their stemma from the time, but estimating a time period of this stemma without the book is impossible.

The Greek National Library has lost the book, and copies are nowhere to be found.


I have only the marrige and death certificates of my Grandmother.
I tried to search the records of Athens town hall, but the clerks insist that the records were burned by the Germans in World War 2, but probably they are just bored to search, because these records are not digital.


After the revolution, there was no organization. No official records. Before the revolution, all official records were writen in old Turkish and most of them are lost.


1880 can be reference to something that happened in Greece after the Revolution of 1821.

Le altre date sono da un vecchio libro callde "Storia di Fillimon", dallo storico Fillimon dopo la rivoluzione greca per Independedce del 1821.
Secondo questo libro, i miei antenati erano "i primi governatori da Venezia" per governare Kalamata nel Peloponneso in Grecia, dopo i Veneziani presero Peloponneso dagli Ottomani. Sono rimasti in Grecia e combattuto nella rivoluzione greca per Independedce del 1821. Il libro comprendeva la storia dei miei antenati e la loro stemma dal tempo, ma la stima di un periodo di tempo di questo stemma senza il libro è impossibile.

thanks for the link. It does appear that there is indeed a stemma that reflects both gigli and volpe, which of course gives great veracity to the subject of a common ancestral origin of the Zane and Ziani.

also - the stemma your grandmother commissioned is quite beautiful - but I wonder why, it is entirely different from those of the known families Zane and Ziani? No gigli, no volpe ... ?

when you mention the link shows a stemma similar to 'yours' - what do you mean by this? From the link, all I see are shields that have the traditional representation present - the gigli and the volpe. For yours, we are looking for the elements of the castle and the lion.

I am sure some of the members of the forum will have better advice on how to continue the search in Greece.

I do not really know how to describe it because i have never seen it, but in the house of my grandmother there was a shield on the wall wich this design. This was lost after the war. My grandfather has kept a sketch of the stemma.
My father told me that during the occupation, Italian soldiers saw the stemma during a raid and then apologized and left.

My aunt, not my grandmother commissioned the stemma embroidery before 30 years. She was very young when the shield was lost, so she had to ask my grandfather to make a sketch for her because she could not remember it.

Io non so come descriverlo, perché non ho mai visto, ma nella casa di mia nonna c'era uno scudo sulla parete wich questo motivo. Questo è stato perso dopo la guerra. Mio nonno ha mantenuto uno schizzo della stemma.

I am always glad to indulge one's desire to recount family stories - as these are indeed important, but trust that there is nothing more rewarding than a proper archival search. Again, I am hopeful that some of the members of this forum, all more competent than I, will have advice on how to continue your archival search in Greece.

This is my hypothesis, and it's only mine -
The stemma does indeed belong to 'a' famiglia Zane, as displayed in the Stemmario you linked. Two historical families - the Zane and the Ziani, likely do come from the same progenitor, as displayed by the stemma containing the capo d'angio and the volpe. Another family Zane, possibly related, but certainly noble, raised the arms you have provided. At some point, when the cloth was made, the dates of the original Ziani, doges of Venice, were added to the legitimate stemma of the Zane - but, it is not definitively known if the noble family Zane, with your arms, is from these other families Ziani and Zane, with the other arms of gigli and volpe. Further to this, it appears, from the link you provided, that even the Ziani of the 1800s were not certainly able to claim descent from the original Ziani, Doges of Venice. The only way to know would be through rigorous archival research. Line by line.

The Doges lived a long time ago. I am not sure that the dates are reference to ancestry from the Doges, and this is probably never going to be verified.
First i should find from which Venetian family my ancestors originated from.
There are not many records in Greece from that era, so going line by line is nearly impossible.
This is why i need to find the Italian family or families my ancestors might have originated from, and then see if they took part in the concuest of Morea and given land and titles.

Was customary to display dates on the stemma?

1682 can be a battle or something else that happened in Peloponnese/Morea. Maybe even the Morea War of 1684. Dates can be 1-2 years off.

1880 is most probably something that happend in Greece during the years of of the Kingdom of Greece, after the revolution.

Can the two towers mean that my ancestors had one castle or palazzo in Venice and another one in Kalamata?

I also search in antique shops in case i can find the original shield with the stemma.

Dr. Auguste Negri, was a Venetian scholar, commissioned to conduct a genealogical investigation by the Zani de Ferranti family.

He gathered information about all the Ziani, Zani and Zane families.

In the second paragraph of the photograph from the first link, he mentions that the second stemma of the Zane was a white fox on blue field.

The third stemma, was Inquartato with silver towers on red field on first and last quarter.

The Zani family use in their stemma, an animal looking more like a lion than a fox or wolf:

So, the Zane in Greece used herladry that the Zane and Zani families used and it seems that the fox changed into wolf and the wolf changed into lion. Maybe different branches of the family adopted different animals?

The problem is that the Zane bloodlines are supposed to have died of in the early 19th Century.
Maybe when Morea was reconquered by the Ottomans the authorities in Vanice lost contact with the Zane in Greece?
Or maybe it was the Zani family that moved in Greece and changed their name into Zane in the 19th century?

Anna, I have no doubt that the shield your family embroidered is indeed authentic in that it is the same as the shield you kindly directed me toward in the photo of the Stemmario. The dates, however, are another story. Again, the first two dates certainly refer to the doges ziani, I have no doubt of this - so another question is do the dates corresponding to the doges ziani have anything to do with an otherwise legitimate stemma Zane?

I also believe it is very likely that the Zane and Ziani were from the same progenitor, especially after witness the stemma with gigli and volpe. But, this is not to say that all families Zane or Ziani were related. Archival work must be done on all before we can conjecture to say.

The question now becomes, how does your family connect? Again, the only way to uncover these mysteries is by an archival search (church archives as well as archives of state) line by line.

I recommend you create a post on 'The Main Square' detailing the hurdles you have faced with your research in Greece, and with a bit of luck, some of the users may be able to offer advice.

Perciò alcune cronache, per indicare il sito delle case di Bajamonte Tiepolo, dicono che esse sorgevano a S. Agostin, in [cm ca’ Zane, sul canton del rio. E nel libro Presbyter si legge che l’ultimo decembre del 4340 fu concesso ad Andrea Zane di poter fare un ponte in riva sancll Augustim' ad suam possessionem quam ibi habel, et ponere capul super lerram vacuam comunis quae full ollm bajamonlis Theupoli prodiloris faciendo illam ila allum sicul est alias pons sanclt Auguslini.

Sostengono alcuni cronisti che la famiglia Zane sia d’un medesimo sangue cogli Ziani. Ma altri, né senza buone ragioni, lo niegano ricisamente. Vogliono quest’ultimi che gli Zane venissero da Eraclea a Malamocco, e da Malamocco a Venezia nel secolo nono, ove coi vicini fabbricassero la chiesa di S. Maria Mater Domini. Yes the arms of Castille and Leon were granted to Domenico Zane, circa 1658, as reported from the book I copied on google books.
