Probably the bird represented on the shield is a blackbird.
Blackbird, "merlo" in Italian, sounds similar to Merluzzi.

Merluzzi – Si tratta di un cognome tipico di Magnano in Riviera (Ud): deriva dal soprannome “Merlo”, più il suffisso diminutivo-vezzeggiativo friulano -uz .

anno 1380 (documento scritto in friulano) "moglir Mirluç de Magnan" = la moglie di Mirluz di Magnano,
anno 1467 "Simon q. Andrea di Francesco Merluzzo di Magnano",
anno 1493 "Paolo q. Giovanni Merluz " di Magnano,
