Lippomano

Messaggioda panwiaderko » martedì 7 gennaio 2014, 2:15

Hey,
I'm going to write in English, because my Italian is pretty poor. In Italia there used to be the Lippomano family, which is now considered as dead. It's partially true, but not at all. Some part of this family moved to Poland and made a living there. As I know this family had some connections with Poland due to Aloysius and Luigi Lippomano. Now there is a gap between Italian part of the family and a Polish part. The first known Lippomano family members in Poland are greatgrandparents of my grandfather. Later the surname was changed to Lippoman to make it more Polish(Propably by the children of the first known Polish Lippomano). We know that originally it was Lippomano thanks to the letters.
Accually I'm here to ask you for a favor. My grandfather has been looking for our crest for a huge part of his life. I have found the orginal crest because of this forum and i'm very thankful :) My grandfather had the crest re-painted. However I suppose that it may look different in Italian, orginal, modern version, and could be found more easily than here, in Poland. If you have an access to that, and if you could send it to me I wold be very thankful.
If not but you know how I can find it also tell me, please. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. I'll try to answer them.

It's quite weird: the two names are basically the same, the first one is the latin version (sort of) of the second one (in Italian).

Dear Friend,
a book by Francesco Foucault de Saint-Germain-Beaupré de Daugnon (1836-1920), "Gli italiani in Polonia dal IX secolo al XVIII" (Italians in Poland from 9th to 18th century) lists the surname Lippi (1579) but not Lippomano. Both Lippi (and Lippo), as Filippi, come from the given name Filippo (Latin Philippus, genitive Philippi).

Ciao a tutti!

The first known information about the Lippomano family in Poland are from the year of Napoleon's death, so about 1821. All possible sources of information about them stayed forever on the lands of Ukraine after the Russians came there (1944-1946). Polish teritory has been changing a lot. It might be the reason they are not in the book you wrote about.

Yes you're right :P, my whole knowledge about the Italian Lippomani is based on some pieces of information from google, so it's not very clear. In fact I've just started going deeper into the subject.

Messaggioda veneziano » giovedì 9 gennaio 2014, 14:41

Hi, Michal
Here is something about your family in Venice. Hope it could be useful.
Veneziano

From “Famiglie nobilissime et descendenti e casade della inclita et alma città di Venetia” - Biblioteca Casanatense
LIPAMANI They came in the ancient times from Negroponte [Eubea island – Greece], and because of the good behavior of Messer Pietro Lipomano and his goodness and during the war of Genua [1293-1299 and more] they were admitted to the Great Council.

From Libro dei Nobili Veneti – Florence 1866
They come from a Jew who became Christian, born in Negroponte. They came in Venice in 908 - from Giuseppe Bettinelli - Famiglie Patrizie Venete (1794) and became rich with commerce, very easy way at that times. Because of the assistance [obviously a financial one] given by Giovanni Lippamano by himself and with his reaches during the war of Chioggia [the last act of the war of Genua - 1379], to his son Pietro and descendants nobility was given ; to demonstrate his gratitude to the community, in place of the earlier two faces of damsel he put two heads of lion, remaining to the descendants.

Wow, Thank You!
I didn't know that Lippomano history is that long. These are very interesting pieces of information. The interesting thing is about these faces of damsel. Does it mean that there was a crest before nobilitation? I didn't know it was possible.

Estinta ? :( Emigrata in Ucraina ??? [hmm.gif]

It seems interesting for me either ;) The only thing I know is that grandfather of my grandfather moved from some small village he owned to Zytomierz on Ukraine. Maybe I'll try to hire some local historician If it won't be too expensive. On the other hand it was terrority of communist Russia, which means mess in documents.

Welcome back,

I hope this thread isn' dead yet :) . I've made some research but I still have a lots of gaps. I've decided to share with you something what I've found.
The first Lippomano was (as you know) Luigi, who was forced to return to Italy because he was accused of burning few people. Some years later came Giorlamo, Paolo and another Luigi. I've read that Giorlamo in his reports wrote that he liked Polish climate, Polish people and customs. He stayed there for ten months and came back to Italy. I don't know anything about the others who came with him.
In Poland from 1518 ruled queen Bona Sforza who brought with her to Poland some Italian families. As far as I know in these times Italian people liked Polish life with a lot of partying, drinking and of course Polish women :) With Bona came families like: Moriconi, Cognovici. In these times Poland was very open and multicultural. Many Italians came these times as mercenaries, cooks and to make a living there. Unfortunately the first Lippomano I managed to find is Adam from about 1800. I'm still looking for the first Lippomano on our lands. I'm going to go to Italy this holiday to make some research. I'll propably start from Bergamo.
