Subject: Prince William to become 1000th Garter Knight

A statement from Buckingham Palace on St George's Day stated: "The Queen has been graciously pleased to appoint His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales to be a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter."

The appointment is the highest honour in the UK honour system and includes no more than 24-members, not including the Royal Family.

William's father Prince Charles was made a Knight in 1958 and his grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh was appointed in 1947.

The last person to receive the Order of the Garter was former Conservative prime minister John Major in 2005.

Other notable recipients include Margaret Thatcher and the Duke of Wellington.

Downing Street has confirmed that the flag of St George will be flown above Number 10 for the patron saint's day today
