è triste segnalarVi che un altro grande araldista di fama internazionale è mancato pochi giorni fa.

Il 14 febbraio è morto infatti il ben noto John Brooke-Little, CVO, FSA, FSG, FHS, Clarenceux King of Arms (ritiratosi nel 1997) dopo una brillante carriera tra gli araldi inglesi e una vita dedicata all'araldica (fu tra i fondatori della prestigiosa Heraldry Society).

Mi piace riportare alcune sue note biografiche così come ricevute da chi mi ha informato della sua scomparsa.

"John Brooke-Little was born 6 April 1927 and was educated at Clayesmore and New College, Oxford (MA). He served on the Earl Marshal's staff from 1952-53 and as Gold Staff Officer at the 1953 Coronation. He was appointed Bluemantle Pursuivant in 1956, Richmond Herald in 1967, Norroy and Ulster King of Arms in 1980 and, finally, Clarenceux King of Arms in 1995 (he resigned from the College of Arms in 1997). In addition to his duties as a Herald, JBL held three administrative positions at the College of Arms: Registrar (1974-1982), Librarian (1974-1994) and Treasurer (1978-1995). From 1991-1997 he was also Director of the Heralds' Museum at the Tower of London (now closed). JBL took great pleasure informing people that the commonly held view that the Order of Saint Patrick was extinct was quite false since, by virtue of his position as Ulster King of Arms (which was merged with that of Norroy), he remained ex officio an Officer of the (dormant) Order and, until such time as the Sovereign chose to formally abolish the position of Ulster King of Arms or to specifically declare otherwise, the holder of that office would continue to serve as the Order's King of Arms, Registrar and Knight Attendant (the fact that the last knight had died in 1974 was of little consequence to this staunch traditionalist).

JBL served as Chancellor of the British Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta from 1973-1977 and eventually held the rank of Knight Grand Cross of Grace and Devotion (having first been admitted to the SMOM as a Knight of Magistral Grace); he was also honoured with the Order of Merito Melitense in 1964. JBL was a Knight of Justice of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jersualem and a Knight Grand Cross of Grace of the Franco-Neapolitan Branch of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George (British Delegation) and also held the Cruz Distinguida (1st class) de San Raimundo de Penafort.

Other positions held by JBL included: Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies; Master of the Scriveners' Company (1985-1986); Chairman of the Council of the Harleian Society, President of the English Language Literary Trust (1985-1996) and Trustee of the RAF Heraldic Trust.

JBL published at least ten books includign Royal Ceremonies of State, Royal Arms, Beasts and Badges, The British Monarchy in Colour, Beasts in Heraldry; An Heraldic Alphabet and Royal London."

Egli molto ha fatto per la nostra scienza, e tutti noi gli dobbiamo qualcosa.

Ho ricevuto il 14 febbraio 2006 da Rafal Heydel-Mankoo (membro ICOC) la notizia della morte dell'araldo John Brooke-Little, e sono profondamente dispiaciuto per la perdita di una persona che ha dedicato tutta la sua vita allo studio dell'araldica ottenendo notevoli apprezzamenti, molto successo e qualche contestazione.

Considero valido il suo lavoro araldico ma non posso dimenticare la prefazione all'opera pubblicata nel 1996 "Ulster's Office 1552-1800" di Terence MacCarthy (il così detto MacCarthy Mór) dove l'opera viene definita come "The Mac Carthy Mór's masterly and definitive work".
Per la sua carica di Norroy and Ulster King of Arms, ed anche esperto della storia gaelica irlandese avrebbe dovuto essere più cauto nel dare la sua amicizia a quello che di lì a poco fu il più grande scandalo genealogico del XX secolo, accettando anche di essere membro del Niad Nasch . Ritengo che come studioso specifico della materia gaelica avrebbe dovuto avere le sue riserve per la povera genealogia provata dal MacCarthy ed informare il Chief Herald of Ireland.

Un altro punto che non condivido è quello relativo alle distorte informazioni che forniva a coloro che chiedevano di immatricolare una certificazione spagnola al College of Arms (ma racconterò questo episodio in una mia prossima pubblicazione), quando poi al tempo stesso faceva parte della medesima associazione che raccoglie gli Araldi di Stato del mondo, di cui il Cronista de Armas di Spagna a quell'epoca era presidente. Vicente de Cadenas da sua parte invece lo propose nel 1982 per la Cruz Distinguida de primera clase de la Ordern de San Raimundo de Peñeafort!

Ed in ultimo non condividevo il suo partigiano pensiero che evitava di spiegare bene cosa sono le Lordship of The Manor (diciamo per parlare in modo che capiscano tutti: l'anima dei feudi, ovvero qualcosa di incorporeo che però la legge britannica riconosce come proprietà e registra nel Land Register).
Faccio presente che le Lorship of The Manor non conferiscono assolutamente nobiltà (in Inghilterra sono nobili solo i Pari), ma sono un ricordo del feudalesimo ed alcuni hanno una storia che risale al IX secolo.
Sicuramente concordo con lui che queste lordship sono ormai prive di realtà oggettiva, ma sino ad oggi per la legge esistono e sono tutelate; se vi interessa il suo pensiero potete vedere cosa scrive: http://www.heraldicmedia.com/site/info/manor.html#T5.
Ma dice mezze verità, non approfondisce il problema preferendo denigrare anzichè spiegare veramente cosa le Lordship siano, ovvero un ricordo storico accettato dalla legge, che come tutti sanno non ha nulla di nobiliare, e non è legato oggi al possesso di una stemma (come lo era in passato), anche se a dire il vero le persone che oggi accedono all'acquisto di una Lordship ne avrebbero diritto per la loro posizione sociale, ma essendo in molti casi stranieri non possono ottenere una grant inglese per il solo fatto di non essere sudditi britannici!

Ma allora perchè denigrava qualcosa di legale come le Lordship per accettare poi l' Ordine Costantiniano di San Giorgio, che vive solo nel ricordo del Regno delle Due Sicilie che non esiste più, o nel mancato riconoscimento della Santa Sede come fidecommisso farnesiano? Un ordine poi che non poteva indossare nel suo Paese perchè S.M. Elisabetta II non ne permette l'uso?

Forse era un uomo dai troppi pesi e misure, come spesso accade in questi ambienti, in ogni modo Dio lo accolga nella gloria dei giusti.
