I was instructed to post here so i can get help with my search for my Italian ancestors.

My ancestors bore the last name Zane. My grandmother was the last to bear the name and died in 1941, when my father and aunts were very young. Most of the family history was lost in World War Two, including the original "scudo" of the stemma that was displayed in the lobby of my grandparrents house.
I manage to find the birth, marriage and birth certificates of my grandparrents, but i am unable to find any ancestor beyond my great-grandfather from the records of Athens town hall. The excuse given is that the Germans burn the records in World War Two, which makes no sense and i believe that the clerks are just bored to go down to the basement and search.
My ancestors came to Greece after the Venetians liberated Morea/Peloponesse from the Ottomans. They were named governors of Kalamata and today, places in Kalamata like streets and parks, bear their name.
As you may know, the Ottomans reconquered Morea. My ancestors were suposed to have staid there and actually took park in the Greek Revolution for Independence of 1821. Mavromichalis is supposed to have married a woman from the Zane family.
The Zane family is supposed to have died of in the very early years of 19th century, but It is quite possible that my ancestors were Zane who were considered lost in Venice, because Morea was under Ottoman control, or they were even considered dead, or even that members from the Zani or another family might have come in Morea in the meantime and claimed the name Zane. Maybe someone married to a woman of Zane ancestry?
My father had found the stemma of our ancestors sometime in the 1960's, and was given a sketch from the National Library of Greece, claiming "Fillimon's History" as source.
The Library now says that this book is lost, but my search revealed that the historian Fillimon did not wrote any such book. I downloaded PDF versions of the books he wrote, from the on-line Libracy of the University of Crete, but no image of my or any other stemma was contained in them.
Good thing that my grandwather had made a sketch of the stemma at the beggining of World War two.
So, how should i search?
Going line by line in Greece will be tough. During the Ottoman times, all record were written in old Turkish, if any record had been kept. Church might have kept records, but which one?Orthodox or Catholic? Both?
It would be easier in my opinion to search what bransh of the Zane and Ziani families has connections with Greece during the time of Kingdom of Morea and then search if the Zane in Greece are related to them.
