The Spanish religious Order of Saint James (Sant Iago) was established in 1160 at the pilgrimage church of Santiago da Compostela in Spain to protect it from Muslims. Over time, this goal evolved into driving Muslims from Spain. The order was highly regarded by the Spanish Habsburgs. Pilgrims to the church ate the tough cockles or scallops found on the shore and attached the empty shells to their hats. Pledged to protect the shrine, members of the order adopted the scallop or cockle shell as their badge.
