Identificazione stemma

Messaggioda VictorIII » venerdì 24 aprile 2015, 1:36

Questo dipinto è identificato online "likely a Portrait of Victor Emmanuel II, first King of United Italy, signed lower right Paul Urdez (sp?)" ...

Googling "Paul Urdez", it seems there are many of those "ancient" portraits arount the World.
Most likely, he was (is?) a painter (with very limited skills) making a lot of copies after original portraits by Old Masters.
So, it's a XIX copy/fake (or even later).
That's for sure.

Tilius, almost prescient with your knowledge of the arts ... I wholeheartedly agree! This auction house from Texas is the only place we can find any of these elusive :) Urdezes, and I'd quite have to agree about the skill of the artist. He's no master!
I for one am momentarily satisfied, as the auction house corrected their egregious error that read "likely a portrait of Victor Emmanuel II" to now merely "portrait of a nobleman".

And thanks to everyone else for the direction with the stemma!

And then there's this!
They don't even say this is "likely" a portrait of Louis XIII, but rather, they qualify it certainly as "Portrait of Louis XIII".
Again, arms that do not belong to the Borbone, and very little likeness to Louis XIII

Even if the coat-of-arms on these paintings could be real, I'm afraid they are randomly chosen, i.e. they have nothing to do with the real coat-of-arms of the real sitter in the original portrait.

Look at this one:

Thanks Maurizio, I fully agree. It's a shame they're being misrepresented in auction.
The painting misrepresented as Louis XIII was a loose and poor copy attempt of de Champaigne's work, which maybe you've seen in del Prado.

;)
And this one:

for sure is not Queen Elizabeth I, but some spanish queen/princess, perhaps a wife/sister/daughter of Philip II, the original picture made by Sanchez Coello or another of spanish/italian painters at Madrid court.
The coat-of-arms, ça va sans dire, belongs neither to Elizabeth nor to the real sitter (the spanish queen).
